Photo by BF Newhall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There you\u2019ll find moon cactuses passing themselves off as petite fours, and poppies doing a dance with a spatter painting by Sam Francis.<\/p>\n<p>Artichokes, orchids, sea fans, thistles, pussy willows \u2013 nothing botanical lies outside the imagination of the 130-plus floral designers displaying their work at the de Young this week. If\u00a0 lush red berries bursting from a ball of cork can be called a bouquet, that is. Or multi-colored sea fans poking out from behind clusters of protea blossoms.<\/p>\n<p>The de Young was jammed Tuesday morning as aficionados of floral art packed into the place for the first day of the five-day show \u2013 when the flowers are at their freshest.<\/p>\n<p>(Tip: the museum was way less crowded around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, when all those eager early birds had taken their sore feet and aching backs home.)<\/p>\n<p>As per tradition, each floral arrangement in the Bouquets to Art exhibition plays off a work of art in the museum\u2019s collection \u2013 from Mexico&#8217;s saintly Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners, to<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13181\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13181\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2013\/03\/20\/bouquets-to-art-at-the-de-young-where-poppies-dance-and-cactuses-are-petit-fours\/\" rel=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2013\/03\/20\/bouquets-to-art-at-the-de-young-where-poppies-dance-and-cactuses-are-petit-fours\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13181  \" title=\"san francisco-garden-club-nicole vidalakis\" src=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/bouquets-san-francisco-garden-club-nicole-vidalakis-580x573-500x493.jpg\" alt=\"Nicole vidalakis of the san francisco garden club used spray roses and intertwined leaves in her floral arrangement complementing an image of Virgin and Child.
