The survey turned up some surprises:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sixty-nine percent of American Hispanics in general have a favorable view of Pope <!--more-->Francis, but only 54 percent look favorably on the Catholic Church. Catholic Hispanics, on the other hand, have a favorable view of the Catholic Church \u2013 81 percent \u2013 as well as a favorable view of the Pope &#8212; 84 percent.<\/li>\n<li>Only 26 percent of evangelical Christian Hispanics favor legal abortion in all or most cases, while nearly twice as many&#8211; 47 percent &#8212; of Catholic Hispanics feel abortion should be legal.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_15553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15553\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2013\/10\/03\/american-hispanics-they-like-the-pope-but-the-church-not-so-much\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15553\" title=\"jesus-on-cross-austin\" src=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/jesus-on-cross-mural-E-austin-2013-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"A mural dipicting Jesus on the cross is painted on an fuse box next to a telephone at a convenience store in east Austin, TX. Again, evangelicals proved far more conservative on the question than Catholics. Only 21 percent of evangelicals support gay marriage, compared to 62 percent of Catholics.<\/li>\n<li>A majority \u2013 53 percent &#8212; of American Hispanics continues to identify as Catholic. But a growing number \u2013 25 percent \u2013 identifies as Protestant. Contrary to popular perception, however, those Protestants are not exclusively evangelical: 13 percent are evangelical, but 12 percent are mainline Protestant.<\/li>\n<li>A 2012 survey found that twenty percent of Americans have no religious affiliation. Similarly, <a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2013\/10\/02\/who-is-a-jew-the-pew-research-center-tackles-the-question\/\">a 2013 Pew survey<\/a> found that 22 percent of self-identifying American Jews say \u201cnone\u201d when asked their religious affiliation. For Hispanics the \u201cnones\u201d group is considerably smaller \u2013 only 12 percent, but growing.<\/li>\n<li>Two thirds of Hispanics believe that the Bible is the word of God, with half of that number believing that the Bible should be taken literally. One quarter of Hispanics, on the other hand, believe that the Bible was written by human beings and is not the word of God.<\/li>\n<li>Sixty-five percent of Catholic Hispanics say they can disagree with church teachings on contraceptive use and still be good Catholics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Public Research Institute\u2019s Hispanic Values Survey included questions on other topics including politics, the role of government, language, and immigration reform.
