Photo by BF Newhall\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Austin &#8212; a power plant scheduled to be removed will make way for a\u00a0 park. <em>Photo by BF Newhall<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>By Barbara Falconer Newhall<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As I got off the plane in Austin, the first thing I noticed was an airport gift shop displaying T-shirts that read \u201cKeep Austin Weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weird?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was in Austin for the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2013\/10\/02\/who-is-a-jew-the-pew-research-center-tackles-the-question\/\">Religion Newswriters Association conference<\/a>, and I\u2019d been too busy to do my get-ready-for-Austin homework. All I knew about this city of 850,000 in Central Texas was that my daughter-in-law had heard it was fun and quirky.<\/p>\n<p>And so it was.<\/p>\n<p>Austin is definitely quirky \u2013 in a good way. At every bridge, park and intersection, Austin made me smile.<\/p>\n<h4>Austin\u2019s Most Endearing Quirks &#8212; And Some Photo Ops<\/h4>\n<p><strong><strong>Gospel Brunch. <\/strong><\/strong>In Austin, you can have it both ways \u2013 your Sunday morning gospel <em>and<\/em> your Sunday morning brunch. Not to mention your Sunday morning Bloody Mary. They\u2019ve been known to build large communal nests, including one atop a tall light pole that&#8217;s within squawking distance of Lady Bird Lake (renamed in honor of President Lyndon B. It built a pedestrian bridge for walkers and cyclists and threw in some benches for those in no rush to get to the other side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quirky President.<\/strong> Austin is the home of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbjlibrary.org\/\">LBJ Library and Museum<\/a>, where an automaton tells quirky old LBJ jokes, and a cartoon depicts the 36th president of the United States lifting his shirt to show off his 1965 gall bladder surgery scar to the press.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carnivore Pride. <\/strong>Folks eat meat in Austin. They eat animals, and they don\u2019t mind telling you so.
