The occasion was the annual Tulip Exhibition at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, and their design, &#8220;Pretty in Pink,&#8221; was just that &#8212; an unabashedly sweet concoction that stood\u00a0in contrast to <!--more-->some nearby\u00a0edgier, darker takes on the tulip.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Bell of Alameda, for instance, paired sweet-smelling lilacs with not-so-sweet, nearly\u00a0black tulip blossoms. And Agnes Kang of the Piedmont Garden Club dared an arrangement\u00a0that\u00a0spilled louche, orange-spangled flowers from\u00a0an out-sized martini glass.<\/p>\n<h5>Fearlessly Pink<\/h5>\n<p>The fearlessly sentimental Lees stuck to their guns and to their color choice. They presented the world with a bouquet of tulips in varying shades of pink, which were set off by tones of &#8212; equally demure &#8212; green.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to take a stand here. I like pink.\u00a0I&#8217;m all for putting\u00a0more\u00a0pink (and maybe a little less edge) out into\u00a0the world.
