It was chill winter in the Midwest<\/a>, but thoroughly spring in the San Francisco Bay Area\u00a0earlier this month\u00a0when local floral designers, professional and amateur,\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0what a tulip\u00a0can do\u00a0— if you ask it\u00a0nicely.<\/p>\n

The event was the11th Annual Tulip Exhibition \u00a0at the Tower Chapel of Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.<\/p>\n

fish bowls. There, the succulent tulip stems curved obligingly, rounding themselves against the inside surfaces of the glass.<\/p>\n

For her “Eruption,”\u00a0Ellen Kim put extra long-stemmed flowers\u00a0into a vase and let\u00a0the stems stretch and explode into\u00a0space. For her design,\u00a0Susan Cohn clipped her stems short and\u00a0tucked them into a flat container, which gave visitors an intimate view of the blossoms\u00a0from above. And during a demonstration on Sunday, Agnes Kang\u00a0showed how\u00a0a flower arrangement\u00a0can be held in place by poking stems through holes drilled through miniature\u00a0logs.<\/p>\n
