Photo by Barbara Newhall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>By Barbara Falconer Newhall<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I worked at\u00a0the Oakland Tribune for years, but, working stiff that I was, I was never invited to the lofty heights of the Oakland Tribune Tower. I finally got my chance on April 4, the last day of my paper&#8217;s publication, to take the elevator all the way to the top and take in the view &#8212; the bay, the East Bay\u00a0hills,\u00a0the\u00a0sometimes sleek, sometimes fanciful architecture produced in Oakland\u00a0over\u00a0the past 100 years. Young, <!--more-->old, graceful, awkward,\u00a0the buildings of the\u00a0East Bay\u00a0sparkled in the April sunshine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24517\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24517\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2016\/06\/02\/oakland-tribune-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2016\/06\/02\/oakland-tribune-tower\/ noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24517\" src=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_5962-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"The Oakland Tribune Tower viewed from 13th and Franklin Streets, Oakland, CA. Photo by Barbara Newhall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Tribune Tower, designed by Edward T. Foulkes and erected in 1923 at the behest of Oakland Tribune publisher Joseph R. Knowland, no longer houses the Tribune. The paper was absorbed\u00a0on April 5\u00a0by the Bay Area News Group&#8217;s East Bay Times. But the tower remains the symbol of the city of Oakland.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-story brick structure\u00a0is in much better shape than when I worked there as a feature writer and columnist back in the &#8217;80s. That fact hit home\u00a0when I took the elevator to the top of the building along with dozens of other\u00a0former Trib employees who&#8217;d come together to mourn\u00a0the Tribune&#8217;s last day of publication.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion was gloomy, but the photo op was lit by a cloudless sky.
