Photo by Barbara Newhall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>By Barbara Falconer Newhall<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hope you are having a great Thanksgiving surrounded by friends, family or both &#8212; of every <a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2016\/11\/17\/i-decided-to-stop-bad-mouthing-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political persuasion<\/a>. As always there&#8217;s a lot to be thankful for, but today I&#8217;m feeling especially grateful for that most American of birds, the turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Every year around this time a bunch of them\u00a0show up at our house. (Honest, they show up in our neighborhood right around Thanksgiving as if to\u00a0. . . what? Guilt us? Apparently the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/article\/wild-turkeys-California-depredation-permit-poop-12309195.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invasion of turkeys<\/a> in California neighborhoods is the result of importing by the state.)<\/p>\n<p>Our daughter Christina has been the Thanksgiving cook for several years now. But this year, with Jon laid up with a broken ankle and Christina distracted by wedding plans for next May, I forgave myself for taking the ultimate shortcut yesterday: I drove over to a local supermarket and bought a ten-pound turkey with all the trimmings for 99 bucks.<\/p>\n<p>When I searched my digital photo collection the other day for &#8220;turkey,&#8221; these photos turned up.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2014\/11\/27\/seven-reasons-to-be-grateful-this-thanksgiving-starting-with-the-rain-a-leaky-dishwasher-and-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thanksgiving\u00a0gratitude<\/a>.
