At last Friday’s Grotto readings, one writer\u00a0read from her\u00a0“Cheating Dining Room Table” MS\u00a0on her smart phone.<\/strong><\/p>\n It’s happening. Jeff Greenwald’s\u00a0 storytelling class\u00a0will be peforming at 6 p.m. Friday, March 23,\u00a0at the Book Passage <\/a>bookstore in San Francisco’s fabled Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street. Join us!<\/p>\n We’ll be part of an evening of presentations by about 25 writers who have been taking classes for the past month or two at the Writers Grotto in San Francisco and Berkeley.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The\u00a0four of us, Lisa\u00a0Michelle Galley, Sharon Metzler Dow, Vanda Marlow\u00a0and I,\u00a0\u00a0will be the only\u00a0people actually telling stories Friday night, however. The other Grotto writing students\u00a0will be reading from their (also very scintillating) manuscripts.<\/p>\n Storytelling, I’ve learned in the past few weeks\u00a0is a\u00a0lively subculture here in the Bay Area and around the US. Amateurs do it. Pros do it. You can hear storytellers on NPR’s The Moth<\/a> radio show as well as on Snap Judgment<\/a>, which is produced right here in the Bay Area, in Oakland.\u00a0You can also take in live storytelling at such venues as Fireside Storytelling <\/a>on Folsom Street in San Francisco.<\/p>\n Storytelling is an ancient art form, probably as old as human\u00a0speech and the desire to share an\u00a0experience. Like many of their storytelling forebears, modern-day storytellers\u00a0share personal narratives from their own lives, without notes and without memorization.
