To wit:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had children, I would strangle them immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, \u201cI long to be free \u2013 desperately free. Free as the stillborn are free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bottum, former editor of the conservative magazine First Things, is a braver soul than I. He seems to have emerged unscathed from his time spent with the downward-facing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/planetcioran.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/emile-cioran-and-culture-of-death.html\"> Cioran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not so tough-minded. I discourage easily. So I\u2019m careful about the writers I allow to spend time in my psyche, rearranging the furniture. It was all I could to do read Bottum\u2019s essay through to the end.<\/p>\n<p>Reading Cioran \u2013 reading about Cioran \u2013 reminded me of a conversation I once had in the city room of the Oakland Tribune. It was with a colleague, Brenda Payton, who was writing a political column for the Trib at the time.<\/p>\n<p>When I asked Brenda what she thought of a particular book that had come across my desk, she replied that she hadn\u2019t read much by that writer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know whether I can entrust myself to her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Entrust?<\/p>\n<p>Is that what we do when we engage with a book \u2013 or a movie or a TV series, for that matter? Are we entrusting ourselves and our ever shape-shifting psyches to that writer? Or, in the case of a TV show, to that roomful of writers?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8820\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/?p=8123\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8820\" title=\"girls-hbo-tv-cast\" src=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/girls-hbo-tv-cast-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"four girls in cast of &quot;Girls&quot; TV show.\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Girls.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I think we do.<\/p>\n<p>Right now Jon and I are watching the brutal Vietnam-era movie, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/deer_hunter\/\">The Deer Hunter<\/a>.&#8221; It paints a sorry picture of the human condition. But I&#8217;m letting it into my brain for a couple of days anyway. The same goes for the weeks I spent last season with a bunch of sad-sack twenty-somethings in the TV series, &#8220;Girls.&#8221;\u00a0Ditto my recent read,\u00a0<em>Out Stealing Horses<\/em>, Per Petterson&#8217;s novel about a man abandoned as a boy by his father.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the psychic furniture can do with a little rearranging.
