Those wild and wooly pandemic hairdos — are they a trend best forgotten? Are we ready to ditch the fluffy-headed look we so gamely embraced in 2020?
For a while there, back in the depths of the pandemic shut-down when few of us could get to the hairdresser, I thought that the fluffy, messy look was going to be the next big, fashion-forward thing.
Wild, Wooly, Feral
I predicted that, post-pandemic, the trendsetters of the world would say good-bye to their Nancy Reagan perfectionist coiffures and let their hair down for good. Once they had experienced the sartorial freedom of covid isolation, I reasoned, they’d never let it go. That loose, untended, feral look was here to stay.
That’s what I thought.
But now, here we are post-covid at last (post-covid meaning, I am now willing to sit indoors at a (well ventilated) restaurant). And, like it or not, things are sliding back to pre-covid normal.
I looked in the mirror the other day and noticed that I was overdue for a haircut. Way overdue. My undisciplined hair, post-covid, looked to be, not so much an expression of freedom and creativity, as a wild and wooly free-for-all. Sometimes a mess is just a mess.
I called my hairdresser.

Ha! After having a cut-it-every-six-weeks pixie cut for years, my hair grew during COVID, and I am now sporting the long-hair look I had from high school through law school and beyond. It’s as straight as ever but completely white now. And I love it! While, as you say, most women have cut their wooly locks, I think it’s fair to say that many, many have stopped dyeing their grey hair!
Long, white covid hair! You chose to keep it. Congrats!
I’ve taken to trimming my own bangs. My hair cutter of many years retired. His wife had breast cancer and he decided to stay home and take care of her. One cannot argue with that.
I would like an occasional haircut; no longer every 5-6 weeks. Does anyone have a hairdresser they recommend in Montclair or close by? I just cut some of my bangs. I usually wear a hat so I must admit my hair is ignored, and happy about it.
I find I am outlasting many a service provider — gutter guy, handyman, gynecologist.
Now that there are so many people with long hair, I haven’t had a haircut in a year. But there must be a limit to how long you can keep doing this.
Oh, my. You are one of several people who’ve told me they’ve kept their long covid locks. Maybe I’m the outlier with my super short do.

I liked the curly head of hair I had in late 2020. But By January 2021, the curls had flattened out and things got too bushy for my taste. My hair was wavy as a young women, and in recent years I’d kept it short, so I had no idea how curly my hair had gotten. I think the curls came along with the white hair.
