What is beauty?<\/p>\n<p>Those are questions many writers won\u2019t touch with a ten-foot pole, except maybe ironically. Or else so circuitously that no one will notice that we&#8217;re actually taking on one of the biggies . . . the better to save face if we mess up.<\/p>\n<p>But the brave \u2013 very young \u2013 souls of something called KidSpirit OnLine <!--more-->don\u2019t mind going where cautious, old timey writers like myself would rather not tread.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19933\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2014\/10\/30\/kidspirit-online-where-young-souls-take-on-the-big-questions\/\" rel=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2014\/10\/30\/kidspirit-online-where-young-souls-take-on-the-big-questions\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19933 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/kidspiritedboard-387x580-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"A dozen or so happy teenagers sit on the front steps of a brick building. In music and elsewhere, he writes, beauty is relative. \u201cMy mother can\u2019t get behind the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LXO-jKksQkM\">dubstep<\/a>,\u201d he says, \u201cbut it has many fans who swear by it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But is there an essence, something that runs through every experience of the beautiful? Yes, writes\u00a0Nimal. \u201cFor this I turn to love . . . It is when we love something that we see the beauty in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OK, so much for beauty. How about truth? Does truth have inherent value?<\/p>\n<p>Sofiy Inck, a 15-year-old Brooklynite, addresses that one. She describes getting into a little argument with her Greek (!) teacher in class. Gravity falls into the category of observable truth.<\/p>\n<p>Personal truth would include such things as a person\u2019s experience of God. And too often, Sofiy says, we get so busy pursuing our personal truths that we devalue how other people feel about their personal truths.<\/p>\n<p>Sofiy comes from a family whose members don\u2019t all share the same religious faith. And she\u2019s sensitive to the fact that asserting her particular personal truths \u2013 religious or political \u2013 at a family dinner can cause pain to others.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, at essay&#8217;s end, young Sofiy is able to stand up to her teacher and to the venerable Socrates of old \u2013 and insist that relationships are more important than locating, asserting and \u201cproving\u201d one\u2019s truth to all comers.<\/p>\n<p>The world needs more Sofiys.<\/p>\n<p>KidSpirit Online is a free on-line magazine for teenagers. It\u2019s written and edited by young people and seeks to engage its readers in the big questions. The program is based in New York, but contributers come from all over the world.
