By acting out scenes by\u00a0the play-writing biggies. That&#8217;s the advice of writer David Corbett.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to a meeting of the Left Coast Writers last week,\u00a0Corbett described\u00a0an acting class he took early in his career. &#8220;I learned to write by acting out scenes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From Arthur Miller I learned how to dramatize an idea.\u00a0From Harold Pinter I learned subtext. And from Tennessee Williams I learned character, character, character.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2015\/08\/15\/crime-novelist-david-corbett-acting-taught-him-how-to-write-scenes\/\" rel=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2015\/08\/15\/crime-novelist-david-corbett-acting-taught-him-how-to-write-scenes\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22542\" src=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/corbett-novel0001-390x580-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of David Corbett's crime novel &quot;The Mercy of the Night.&quot; \" width=\"150\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Jon, who accompanied me to the monthly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.leftcoastwriters.com\/\">Left Coast Writers<\/a> meeting\u00a0at Book Passage in Corte Madera, California, we now have a copy of Corbett&#8217;s latest crime novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/24961365-the-mercy-of-the-night\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Mercy of the Night,&#8221;<\/a> in the house.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, I&#8217;m not drawn to mystery, crime or thrillers &#8212; too scary; I&#8217;m a wimp.
