I&#8217;ll be making a brief appearance in a movie coming out soon. It&#8217;s a documentary about my old San Francisco Chronicle pal, Armistead Maupin, the author of the ribald, much-loved &#8220;Tales of the City&#8221; novels and TV series.<\/p>\n<p>Documentarian Jennifer M. Kroot needed to\u00a0interview someone who&#8217;d been there at the birth of &#8220;Tales of the City&#8221; and could tell some tales out of school.<\/p>\n<p>I love a good story and I do have a few to tell about Armistead&#8217;s struggles to show up at the Chronicle\u00a0city room on a regular basis and turn in newspaper copy\u00a0on a tight deadline.\u00a0Deadlines are a challenge for the best of journalists, but<!--more--> unlike beat reporters who arrive at their keyboards with a fistful of notes and quotes to draw on &#8212; facts &#8212; Army had to pull\u00a0his copy out of thin air.\u00a0He had to make\u00a0his stuff up.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17047\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17047\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2017\/01\/14\/armistead-maupin-2\/ \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2017\/01\/14\/armistead-maupin-2\/ noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17047\" src=\"http:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2014-01-iphone-788-412x580-355x500.jpg\" alt=\"Tales of the City author Armistead Maupin reads from &quot;The Days of Ana Madrigal&quot; at Book Passage, SF Ferry Building\" width=\"250\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Armistead Maupin at a book signing at Book Passage in San Francisco. <em>Photo by Barbara Newhall<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5>&#8216;Tales of the City&#8217; &#8212; Real-Life\u00a0Stories?<\/h5>\n<p>Of course, some\u00a0of us in the features department &#8212; that&#8217;s where Armistead was assigned to sit and grind\u00a0out his copy &#8212; suspected, judging by the circles under his eyes on some mornings, that many\u00a0of the events described in &#8220;Tales of the City&#8221; had in fact transpired the night before in real-world San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rogovy.org\/untold-tales-of-armistead-maupin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The film<\/a>, titled &#8220;The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin,&#8221; chronicles Armistead&#8217;s evolution from a closeted Southerner with a deeply conservative mentality to the open-hearted author of stories in which\u00a0a madcap array of people, gay and straight,\u00a0blue collar and social register, meet and mingle, with hilarious results.<\/p>\n<p>Kroot is the director of\u00a0&#8220;To Be Takei,&#8221; which documents the life of\u00a0&#8220;Star Trek&#8217;s&#8221; George Takei. That film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. She also directed\u00a0&#8220;It Came From Kuchar,&#8221; which limns the careers of\u00a0cult filmmakers George and Mike Kuchar. Gerry Kim and Mayuran Tiruchelvam are the producers. Bill Weber is the editor. The project has been receiving financial support\u00a0through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.documentary.org\/film\/untold-tales-armistead-maupin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiscal sponsor<\/a>, the International Documentary Association.<\/p>\n<p>The film is nearly completed, and filmmaker Kroot\u00a0tells me that I have &#8220;some great moments&#8221; in it.
