His &#8220;Tales of the City&#8221; books have been popular favorites for decades. And the TV series based on his books won the hearts of many. Now, Jennifer M. Kroot&#8217;s documentary &#8220;The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin&#8221; is No. 4 &#8212; No. 4! &#8212; on the San Francisco Chronicle&#8217;s Critical Consensus list &#8212; just below &#8220;Dunkirk,&#8221; &#8220;Served Like a Girl&#8221; and &#8220;Blade Runner. 2049.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The newly released film &#8212; which features a bit part from me in which I reminisce about the years Maupin and I worked together at the Chronicle &#8212; earned an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/movies\/criticalconsensus\/article\/Critical-consensus-for-movies-Oct-29-12306276.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average score of 8.9<\/a> out of 10 points from major film critics across the country. Critics are loving it, and I imagine moviegoers are, too.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary beats out dozens of movies on the list, including &#8220;Brawl in Cell Block 99,&#8221; &#8220;Lucky,&#8221; &#8220;Bending the Arc&#8221; and &#8220;The Last Dalai Lama?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maupin and I go way back &#8212; to the days he wrote the first chapters of &#8220;Tales of the City&#8221; as a serial published in the People section of the Chronicle.
