Why does Yosemite Valley in its vastness make us dizzy with awe? Why does a ladybug in its miniature perfection stop us in our tracks? Why does a meadow high on a coastal bluff leave us wondering how such a place can even <em>be<\/em>; and how is it we are standing in that place right now, today?<\/p>\n<p>Last week, as temperatures reached into the 90s, my hiking friend and I needed a trail that would be cool on the brow and easy on the knees. We decided on the reasonably level, three-mile round trip hike to Abbott&#8217;s Lagoon at Point Reyes National Seashore.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39086\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39086\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39086 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/server.stagingweb3.net\/barbarafalconernewhall\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/california-poppy-with-seed-pods-Eschscholzia-californica-RESZIED-2.webp\" alt=\"california-poppy-with-seed-pods-what-is-beauty\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">California poppies <em><a href=\"https:\/\/calscape.org\/Eschscholzia-californica-(California-Poppy)?srchcr=sc64a9fddf04d1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Eschscholzia californica<\/a>)<\/em> were the first of the wildflowers to greet us at Abbott&#8217;s Lagoon. They&#8217;re the poppies&#8217; seed pods, which will burst open when ripe. <em>Photo by Barbara Newhall<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We slung our packs on our backs and set out, expecting a pleasant afternoon of fresh air and companionship, strolling the seaside patch of wilderness that is Point Reyes.<\/p>\n<p>What we got was &#8212; a bouquet.<\/p>\n<p>I know. Nature does not arrange itself into a thing of beauty for the pleasure of a pair of humans on a summer stroll. But what we got last week felt intentional. It felt like a reward for getting out of bed that day. As we made our way toward the ocean, the landscape shifted with each change in climate and terrain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A tall stand of water parsley <em><a href=\"https:\/\/calscape.org\/Oenanthe-sarmentosa-(Pacific-Oenanthe)?srchcr=sc64a9fbb4d412b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Oenanthe sarmentosa)<\/a><\/em> bobbed its white blossoms over our heads.<\/li>\n<li>Poison oak <em>(Toxicodendron diversilobum)<\/em> and California blackberry <em><a href=\"https:\/\/calscape.org\/Rubus-ursinus-(California-Blackberry)?srchcr=sc64a9fcc89697b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Rubus\u00a0 ursinus)<\/a><\/em> cohabited in a high wall of vegetation abutting the trail &#8212; a foot or two from our cheeks.<\/li>\n<li>Purple lupine punctuated a sea of mauve-colored grass.<\/li>\n<li>And at the beach, voluptuous clumps of yellow bush lupine <a href=\"https:\/\/calscape.org\/Lupinus-arboreus-(Coastal-Bush-Lupine)?srchcr=sc64a9fb2bcf7fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>(Lupinus arboreus)<\/em><\/a> sprawled in the sun.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each new microbiome along the trail was its own surprise, with its distinctive burst of grasses, shrubs and wildflowers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39066\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/server.stagingweb3.net\/barbarafalconernewhall\/2023\/07\/08\/what-is-beauty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"https:\/\/barbarafalconernewhall.com\/2023\/07\/08\/what-is-beauty\/ noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39066 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/server.stagingweb3.net\/barbarafalconernewhall\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Oregon-gumweed-Grindelia-stricta-yes-20230630_141059-2.webp\" alt=\"what-is-beauty-Oregon-gumweed-Grindelia-stricta\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oregon gumweed <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/calscape.org\/Grindelia-stricta-(Oregon-Gumweed)?srchcr=sc64a9f9d430a58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grindelia\u00a0 stricta)<\/a><\/em> &#8212; a quirky, low-growing charmer. <em>Photo by Barbara Newhall<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Did I say we were tossed a bouquet? My mistake. We caught bouquet after bouquet that day. One after another.<\/p>\n<p>My friend and I have some years on us &#8212; eight full decades each. But walking and breathing at Abbott&#8217;s Lagoon on that day &#8212; it felt like we were opening our eyes to the world for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><em>Same topic, different mood: <a href=\"http:\/\/server.stagingweb3.net\/barbarafalconernewhall\/2014\/05\/15\/nature-we-love-it-but-does-it-give-a-darn-about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Nature &#8212; We Love It, But Does It Give a Darn About Us?&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0 Also <a href=\"http:\/\/server.stagingweb3.net\/barbarafalconernewhall\/2010\/02\/27\/a-case-of-the-human-condition-beauty-is-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder-but-what-if-theres-no-beholder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder.
