A poetry book for kids, “For Every Little Thing.” Cover detail

In these trying covid times, we all could use a little reminder now and then that there is plenty to be grateful for.

A new book of poetry for kids aims to do just that — to show its young readers how to spot, and treasure, the small joys and beauties in our lives.

The book is “For Every Little Thing: Poems and Prayers to Celebrate the Day.”  June Cotner and Nancy Tupper Ling are the editors. The first-rate illustrations are by Helen Cann.

The book will be published on September 21, but you can preorder right now.

“For Every Little Thing” would make a nice holiday gift for kids and their parents. But I say, don’t wait! This book is all about gratitude, which is exactly what a lot of us need right now, today.

Fifty-one poems are included, and the voices are both modern and traditional and come from many cultures. Emily Dickinson is there, so is the Hindu guru, Amma. Also Rabbi Rami M. Shapiro and children’s poet Kenn Nesbitt.

And so am I. The poem  I contributed to this anthology is a bedtime prayer. It is short, but I like to think that its message will get you through the night.

  1. Thank you for letting me know about your book. You are in good company with other great poets like yourself! Have ordered a copy for our grandchildren.

I wanted to bring you a succulent for your new garden space, but my husband thinks I should wait until our short rainy season begins. Then I’ll recheck with you to see what plant YOU want is missing/needed.

  2. The book sounds perfect for us now that we have a small child. I can’t wait to get it! I wonder if I can preorder through my local (or any) independent bookstore?
