What to Expect During a Cleaning

If it’s been more than six months since your last dental cleaning, you may require a full mouth debridement. This procedure removes hardened plaque (calculus) to give the dental team a clear view of your gum health. In some cases, a follow-up appointment may be necessary to complete the full cleaning process.
For patients with signs of gum disease or deep pockets between the teeth and gums, a procedure called scaling and root planing—also known as a deep cleaning—may be recommended. This treatment cleans beneath the gumline to help restore gum health and prevent further damage.
Healthy gum pockets typically measure between 1mm and 3mm. Pockets deeper than 4mm can harbor harmful bacteria and may eventually lead to bone loss or tooth mobility if not treated. To ensure your comfort throughout treatment, a local anesthetic is used as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often should I get my teeth professionally cleaned?

Most patients benefit from cleanings every six months, but your dental hygienist may recommend more frequent visits based on your individual needs.

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning focuses on the surface of the teeth and gumline, while a deep cleaning targets plaque and bacteria beneath the gumline in areas with advanced gum disease.

Will a deep cleaning hurt?

A local anesthetic is used to minimize discomfort. Most patients report little to no pain during the procedure.

How do I know if I need a deep cleaning?

If your dentist or hygienist notices deep gum pockets, inflammation, or signs of gum disease during your exam, they may recommend scaling and root planing.

What can I do at home to maintain clean teeth?

Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, using an antimicrobial mouthwash, and staying current with your dental checkups are essential to maintaining a healthy smile.
